4 Reasons to take a Vacation

Summer is the biggest vacation season; however, vacations can be taken at anytime. According to this article, 40% of Americans take at least 1 vacation every year. But, that number drops to 28% when it is 3 or more vacations per year.

In an Insider article, the average number of days taken for vacation that lead people to answer “they were satisfied” was 13 days while those who said they wished for more time, only took off 10 days, on average.

In either article, it is not mentioned if these days off were consecutive or if it was a day here and there. Both articles outline that respondents only took time off if it didn’t interfere with their work.

Another way to say this is:

I am putting my job first over my vacation.

The ironic truth to taking vacations that employees and employers should take into consideration is that, by taking vacation, workers are significantly in a better productive position.

Here are 4 reasons to take a vacation!

Physical Health

The number one reason to take a vacation is that one’s physical health will improve. By removing yourself from a stressful situation—and let’s admit, as much as you love your job, it can be stressful—can lead to a variety of health improvements:

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Weight loss

  • Healthier heart

  • Healthier immune system

Another benefit in regards to improved physical health is that, the healthier you are, the less sick days you need to take, so not only can you be more productive at work (when not on vacation) and you don’t spend time in a doctor’s office.

Mental Health

Our bodies are tied closely with our mental health. When we physically feel good, we mentally feel good. It is recommended to students to dress nice – even professionally – when taking exams because it has shown to help with getting a better grade than wearing sweatpants.

As the character Elle Woods from Legally Blonde says:

“Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy.”

Now, I am not advocating for exercise, though that is a good thing, but my point is – how closely related physical and mental are.

Here are some other mental benefits as reasons to take a vacation:

  • Lower stress

  • Increased productivity

  • Increased creativity

Social Health

Another way to get endorphins is through a social setting. When we are around people we enjoy that also encourage and support us, our mental health improves as well.

Your social health is a huge reason to take a vacation.

You get to:

  • Catch up with old friends

  • Make new friends

  • Spend time with family

Who doesn’t want to hang out with friends and family?

    Work Health

Finally, all these reasons combine to make the last reason to take a vacation, the improvement of your work health.

When you come back to work healthier, happier, and full of energy, there are significant work benefits:

        • Better odds of getting a promotion

        • Decreased burnout

So, at the end of the day, taking vacations actually means you aren’t evading work responsibilities, but in fact, making yourself a better worker.
